Welcome to my website!

I am interested in regenerative agriculture, food security, and adaptation to climate change at multiple scales (e.g. homestead and farm, community, landscape, bioregion, and global). I embed my research in relationships at the community-scale, and move downscale or upscale from there.
I have been teaching environment and natural resource management courses in 1996. I try to add as much relevant fieldwork as possible to each course, because I think textbook material needs to be complemented by experiential, community-oriented projects outside the walls of the classroom.
The "People" tab highlights the great colleagues and students with whom I work. In the "Research" tab of this website, you will discover a number of past and ongoing research projects in different parts of Canada and the world. For some lightheartedness, see the "Humour" page.
At Bishop's University, we have begun to offer programs in Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems, including an internationally-recognized Permaculture Design Certification course.
My wife Jennifer, also a professor in sustainable agriculture, and I live on a small farm where we tend large gardens, save heirloom seeds, and raise a variety of animals (the banner photo above showing complementary grazing of goats and geese, with gardens in the background, was taken in our backyard. Brinky-boy in my arms is a young male goat we raised from birth). Our goal is to be good stewards of the land and resources using agroecological practices and regenerative farming. We are learning all the time, mainly by devouring books and by trial and error. There is nothing better than sharing a meal with family and friends where everything on the plate was raised or grown by ourselves within 20 meters of our kitchen.
If you are looking for a close-knit group of students and professors, hands-on experience in the field and laboratory, and critically important issues to work on, come to Bishop's University! You can sign up for one of our undergraduate programs: BA Geography; BA Environmental Studies; BSc Environmental Science; Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems; or our graduate program in Climate and Environmental Change. You can also write to me about possible post-doctoral research opportunities.
